Cameras have been rolling in Belfast
Last updated 17 hours ago
Following the dramatic finale of Blue Lights series three on Monday 3rd November 2025, fans of the Belfast-based crime drama will be thrilled to know the show has already been commissioned for a fourth instalment.
After it was revealed earlier this year that Richard Dormer will return as Gerry Cliff in the new series, the script read through took place in January, with filming officially starting in Belfast a few days later.
When did filming start?
Production company Two Cities Television shared the exciting news on social media, posting a photo of the clipperboard from 2nd February. The post was captioned with: 'Series 4 of Blue Lights has officially started filming in Belfast and the cast and crew are very excited to be back at Blackthorn.
'All callsigns standing by, for what is set to be the most incredible series yet....'
Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, co-creators and co-writers said: “We’re very excited to bring this series of Blue Lights to audiences. It reveals a lot of dark secrets, examines what justice looks like in Belfast today, and ties together the past, present, and futures of Grace, Annie and Tommy in an action-packed story. We can’t wait to start filming it!”
After the first week of filming, Director Angela Griffin wrote on Instagram on Sunday 8th February: 'Week one done. #BlueLights4
'It’s cold, it’s windy, it’s cold, it’s rainy and it’s cold. But it’s brilliant. Firmly back in the saddle and loving it…
'Directing has three parts, the prep, the shoot and the edit… each one allows you to craft the story… but my favourite will always be the shoot, regardless of the weather. Being part of the crew, collaborating with cast, and realising all the visuals we’ve discussed and planned for weeks is magical. It’s always better than I’ve imagined.

Is filming compete?
Although it's not completely finished, the first block of filming for Blue Lights series four is now complete!
Sharing the news on Instagram, Director Angela Griffin wrote: 'Blue Lights Season 4 - block 1…. Done.
'Well it’s in the can anyway.
'Into the edit I go.
'I’ve loved it.
'Will massively miss my whole crew, who went above and beyond regularly and who have possibly the best dance moves collectively as proved at the halfway wrap last night.
'The biggest shoutouts to @raycarlin @ciarancolton and @jackhislop31
'So great to be back after directing episodes 4,5 and 6 of S3. We won an @iftaacademy, a @bpgpressguild a @royaltelevisionsociety award and 3 BAFTA nominations.
'No pressure'. (sic)
Where is it filmed?
Although no exact filming locations have been revealed for series four just yet, the show will is once again being filmed in and around Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Earlier this year, the BBC shared photos from the official series four script read through, where main characters Grace Ellis (Siân Brooke), Stevie Niell (Martin McCann), and Annie Conlon (Katherine Devlin) all appeared, alongside returning cast member Gerry Cliff (Richard Dormer).

When was series four announced?
Way back in February 2024, before series two had even aired, BBC bosses announced Blue Lights had been renewed for a third and fourth series.
When is it out?
There's no word on when series four will be released just yet, but we suspect series four of Blue Lights could land later this year.
What will series four be about?
BBC say of the plot: 'Three years into their jobs as response officers, Constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster, and Annie Conlon are operating at their limit, facing a new threat on the streets that the police can barely control.
'Meanwhile the murder trial of Gerry Cliff exposes a dangerous and long-buried secret that leads to chaos both inside the police, and across the criminal underworld. As they grapple with big decisions about their future, Grace, Tommy and Annie must find the courage to face the greatest threat they have ever encountered: the truth'.
Who is in the cast?
The usual faces from the first three series will all return, as well Richard Dormer, Hannah McClean and Jonathan Harden also returning to the cast. Cathy Tyson, Michael Smiley and Andrea Irvine will also appear in series four.
Actor Richard Dormer, who played the role of Gerry Cliff in series one, will be returning to the show, despite his character dying. Series four will also see the return of Hannah McClean as solicitor Jen Robinson, and Jonathan Harden as disgraced former Inspector, Jonty, in a special episode that will answer important questions from the past.
Nick Lambon, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, UK & Northern Ireland, then said: “Blue Lights has gripped and entertained millions of viewers across three series and Declan and Adam’s scripts will once again have us all on the edge of our seats. Gerry Cliff was such an integral part of series one so to have Richard Dormer back alongside our talented cast is a dream come true. We are over the moon to be back filming in Belfast, and with so many twists and turns in store, fans of Blue Lights have plenty to look forward to.”
