Ed Sheeran releases music video for new English-Punjabi song 'Sapphire'

Over the last few months Ed Sheeran's fans have been delighted with a string of music news, including new songs 'Azizam' and 'Old Phone', along with confirmation of his upcoming album name, 'Play', and the release date of 12th September.

Now, the 'Bad Habits' singer has released the third song from his album, the song called 'Sapphire' fuses together English and Punjabi, and Ed has now released the music video.

Is there a music video?

Yes, there is a music video, it was released on 5th June, and shows Ed in various locations around the world.

How did Ed Sheeran announce 'Sapphire'?

Ed announced the song sharing various videos. In one video, Ed can be seen riding in the back of a tuk-tuk as he tries to high five people he passes. In the clip, the lyrics include some in English and also Punjabi: "Cham cham chamke sitare wargi", which translates as 'the stars shine brightly'.

After sharing the short clip, fans of the singer left comments saying how much they love his new track. One wrote: 'I love this so much!!!', with another saying: 'So excited for this! Sounds amazing ❤️❤️'.

Ed previously told us in an interview how he wrote much of his new album in India. He said: "We finished the whole album in India, so most of the record has Indian instruments all over it, so we've got tablas on most songs, sitars on the last song so, very much santoors on a lot of songs. It is a pop album, but all the instrumentation on it, is sort of from everywhere."

Ed also opened up about the name of his upcoming album, 'Play', explaining: "When I was 18, I was just like I wanna do 10 records, I'd done five EPs and I was like, I wanna do 10 albums, ‘Multiply’, ‘Plus’, ‘Divide’, ‘Equals’, ‘Subtract’, and then ‘Play’, ‘Pause’, ‘Rewind’, ‘Fast Forward’, ‘Stop’.

“I just thought it was nice to... you always know what the next thing's gonna be, what the colours gonna be, what the symbols gonna be."

He added: "I thought maybe if I do a deluxe version of ‘Play’ it can be called ‘Replay’."
