Further casting announced for Shrek 5
The movie has been delayed until 2027
Last updated 28th Nov 2025
Fans of Shrek were over the moon last year when it was announced that Shrek 5 is officially happening, a massive 14 years after the last instalment; Shrek Forever After. With filming now underway, here's everything you need to know, as the release date has been delayed for the second time...
When is Shrek 5 out?
In 2024, DreamWorks announced Shrek 5 would land on 1st July 2026, writing: 'Not too Far, Far Away…@Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz'. (sic)
HOWEVER, in January 2025, Universal Pictures told Variety that the fifth instalment has now been delayed until 23rd December 2026, with Minions 3 being moved earlier to take Shrek's spot.
In another update, in August 2025, Deadline reported the movie has now been pushed back for a second time, with a new release date of June 2027.
When is filming?
Speaking to Collider in June 2024 Eddie Murphy, who voices the character of Donkey in the movies, confirmed filming started earlier in 2024, also adding there's going to be a separate Donkey movie for fans to look forward to.
He said: "We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 months ago.
"I recorded the first act and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey movie."
When Eddie was asked if the two movies were being made at the same time, he added: "No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next."
Who is in the cast?
It's now been confirmed that Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) will all return for the fifth movie.
In the cast announcement trailer released in February 2025, it was also revealed that Zendaya has joined the cast, playing the role of Shrek and Fiona's daughter Felicia.
On 27th November 2025, bosses then announced that Saturday Night Live‘s Marcello Hernández and Superman‘s Skyler Gisondo have joined the voice cast as Shrek and Fiona’s sons, Fergus and Farkle.
Illumination boss Chris Meledandri has previously spoken about the fifth movie.
Speaking to Variety at an event to celebrate the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chris said of Shrek 5: "It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with Mario, where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honour those core elements.
"And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."
