Experts predict a rise in the name Ophelia due to the 'Taylor Swift Effect'
There's been a 316% increase in searches month-on-month for Ophelia
It's safe to say Taylor Swift is the biggest pop star on the planet right now! After dropping her 12th album 'The Life of a Showgirl' on 3rd October, resulting in a whopping 300,000 UK sales ALONE in the first seven days, she's now announced a Disney+ series, documenting her 'Eras Tour'.
But it sounds like Taylor's phenomenal music could be having a wider input, as experts are predicting a surge in the name Ophelia, thanks to Tay's latest single 'The Fate of Ophelia'.
Experts at My 1st Years are predicting that more parents will choose the name Ophelia for their babies following the release of 'The Fate of Ophelia', with data showing Google searches for the name peaked on the release day of 'The Life of a Showgirl'.
Molly Ejdowski, spokesperson for My 1st Years, said: “Despite the name Ophelia only ranking at 73rd position in the official 2024 baby name figures, we were already seeing growing interest in the name before Taylor’s new album dropped.
“Orders for our products personalised with the name Ophelia were already up 15% year-on-year and now, with the addition of the Taylor effect, we expect that interest to continue growing.
“Official figures show there were 645 Ophelias born in England and Wales in 2024 but, thanks to The Fate of Ophelia, we believe this could rise – both this year and next.”
What is the meaning of Ophelia?
The name Ophelia is of Greek origin and means ‘help’.
During a recent interview with Hits Radio, Taylor opened up about the meaning behind her smash hit song. She said: "'The Fate of Ophelia', I just have this fixation on Shakespeare characters that I fall in love with and I can't stand to see them meet a tragic demise.
"I can't, I don't want that to be what happened to them because I'm like, wait, are you talking about Ophelia die? She died? What do you mean? I was really excited to see what happened with her and Hamlet. They seemed great. And I'm kind of going back to like the song 'Love Story', which I wrote when I was a teenager."
