It’s been revealed that the woman who died after a street attack in Dundee yesterday is Dr Fortune Gomo from Zimbabwe, a PhD graduate of the city’s university.
The 39-year-old mum who worked for Scottish Water was seriously injured on South Road around 4.25pm. Emergency responders raced to the scene but were unable to save her life.
Police arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the death and said their inquiries were continuing and that there was no wider public.
The death of Dr Gomo has shocked former colleagues and it sparked a peaceful protest today.
A spokesperson for the University of Dundee said, “This has been a truly shocking event in our city and for our University community.
“It will be particularly distressing for those who knew and worked with Fortune throughout her time as a PhD student and postdoctoral research assistant in Geography, and for all of those in our close-knit community of African colleagues and students.
“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this tragic time.”
Dundee West MP Chris Law told us: “I’m truly shocked and appalled by this and my immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim.
“I hope Police Scotland provide more details of who has been involved.”
Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, the officer in charge of the inquiry, said his thoughts were with the woman's family.
He said: "Extensive enquiries are ongoing and I am satisfied that the incident has been contained and there is no wider risk to the public.
"I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident or has information that may assist us to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 2283 of July 5, 2025.
