Two men have been charged in connection with a car crashing into a care home in Sunderland.

Northumbria Police said they engaged in a pursuit with a blue BMW on Wednesday evening, on the A1231 eastbound in Sunderland.

Five minutes later, the car collided with the Highcliffe Care Home premises on Whitchurch Road in Witherwack, causing structural damage.

The vehicle in question had earlier been reported stolen from the Fenham area of Newcastle after a proposed car sale.

It is alleged that a woman involved in the proposed sale was inside the vehicle when it was driven off before being forcibly removed a short time later.

She was left shaken but uninjured by the incident.

Two men – both aged 21 - have now been charged with a number of offences in connection with the reports.

Sam Asgari-Tabar, of Stratford Road, Sunderland, has been charged with robbery and kidnap.

He has also been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving in relation to one of the care home residents who remains in hospital.

Reece Parish, of Fordham Road, Sunderland, has been charged with robbery and kidnap.

In a separate matter, he has also been charged with violent disorder in connection with the events in Sunderland city centre on August 2 last year.

Both men are due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court today (Saturday 12 July).

Northumbria Police said an investigation into the deaths of two care home residents continues.
