An 18-year-old man has been arrested after an elderly woman died following a collision with an electric motorcycle in Sunderland.

The woman, in her 80s, was crossing the road in the Burdon Road area, close to Lidcombe Close, just before 1pm on Friday (16 May).

She was struck by an electric motorcycle, now known to be a black Sur-Ron, travelling northbound. The rider left the area.

The woman died at the scene.

An 18-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and the vehicle involved was recovered.

He has since been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

Northumbria Police said it was keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened, especially those with CCTV or dashcam footage.

Increased patrol activity will be taking place over the weekend, and anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with officers.
