Southport MP launches campaign to reduce Freddo price
Southport MP Patrick Hurley wants the price to be lowered to 5p
One of Labour's MPs has launched a campaign to reduce the price of Freddos to just five pence.
Southport's Patrick Hurley says the current 20p charge is too much in a cost of living crisis.
The 18g Cadbury chocolate bar was originally introduced to the UK in the 1973.
It then relaunched in 1994 when it cost 10p - and for more than a decade, the price of a Freddo remained at 10p.
However the price has started to rise in the last 20 year old - and it currently costs around 30p.
A spokeperson for Mondelēz International - which owns Cadbury - said:
"It's fantastic to hear about young people engaging in politics. It’s also important to note that as a manufacturer we do not set the retail prices for products sold in shops.
"However, what we can say is that since Freddo launched in 1973, our manufacturing costs have increased significantly and cocoa prices are at a record high, all of which need to be taken into consideration.
"Freddo remains a popular treat and a key part of our range as we celebrate Cadbury's 200-year anniversary."
