Robbie Williams has spent thousands of pounds to own a pair of glasses owned by comedian Eric Morecambe.

The legendary comedian, known for his Morecambe and Wise show, died in 1984 at the age of 58 following a heart attack shortly after performing in Cheltenham.

An auction had been held which sold a number of the TV star's possessions including a pair of glasses and a pipe, which had been estimated at a total price of £1,000.

However, former Take That singer Robbie said in a social media post that he had paid some £20,000 for the opportunity to own the items.

Taking to his Instagram, the star said: "So I treated myself to a done-loads-of-promo-for-my-film prezzie. Also, with my birthday coming up I thought it might be a 2-for-1."

Williams said he cried "happy, childlike tears" when the deal went through, meaning that he was able to own the memorabilia.

"I guess we all need friends-we-never-meet from off the telly; Eric has always been mine," he wrote, an uncle of sorts.

"To the very core of me, Eric Morecambe’s spirit has been salve for my soul. How Eric made me feel is how I want to make people feel. What a gift to be able to create such joy and have that joy be present just by thinking of them."

He went on to pay tribute to Eric, adding: "Eric, you were and are the very best of the very best. That sunshine you asked for, you gave to me."
