The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have spent the early afternoon at St Andrews University, where they met 20 years ago.

They spoke to students, asking them about their experiences of the pandemic.

One of the first remarks Prince William made was to comment on the heavy rain.

Our reporters from sister station Tay FM were there to see them look around:

"We had a little gap earlier where it was nice and dry," said the Earl of Strathearn, underneath one of the arches in St Salvator's Quad.

The royal pair painted love hearts, took in some salsa and ballroom dancing and planted a tree as part of the university's low carbon target.

One of students who spoke to them was Deanna Coleman.

"I feel really grateful. Obviously they're alumni of the university so it's really great that they have kept in touch and they want to know what's going on and be a part of one of the projects we've got going on at St Andrews," she said.

"The fact they were interested and asking questions is quite rare. Coming from people like them is really great."

The Duke and Duchess were guided around their old stomping ground by the University's Principal and Student President, Dan Marshall.

"It was such a highlight for me because it brings together so many of the things I love about St Andrews," he said.

"Both the history and the tradition in a place like this but also to be able to showcase some of the fantastic work our students have done over the past year.

"It really felt like they were coming back to somewhere they knew well."
