A domestic abuser has been jailed for 27 years after stabbing a woman whilst she was on the phone with police.

Just before 1am on 27 January 2024, Olegs Arklins, 45, turned up at his victim's house. She called the police to to say he was intoxicated and was making threats towards her and, whilst she was on the phone, he stabbed her.

Officers arrived at the scene on Norfolk Street, Westcotes to find Arklins sitting on the pavement outside the house. He was arrested and his victim sent to hospital where she needed life-saving surgery.

She has since made a full recovery.

Detective Constable Vik Patel, from the Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit (DAIU) at Leicestershire Police, was the officer in the case. He said: “This was a horrific incident that very nearly led to a woman losing her life.

“Not only has she thankfully recovered from her injury, she has shown great strength and bravery in providing an account that led to Arklins being convicted and now locked up for a very long time.

“He is a dangerous individual who, despite saying it was not his intention to kill, clearly carried out his actions with that motive. I hope the public can take some reassurance from the fact he’s in prison and unable to harm any other members of the public.”

In police interviews, Arklins said he did not intend to kill her, but he was charged with attempted murder.

He has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.
