Investigations are ongoing into a train derailment near Shap in Cumbria early this morning (Monday, 3rd November), which caused significant disruption to rail passengers.

The train, travelling from Glasgow Central to London Euston, derailed at around 6.10am after reportedly hitting an object. The front carriage was affected, though fortunately no passengers were harmed. Passengers were evacuated from the train to a nearby hotel and later transported by road to their destinations.

Experts from Network Rail and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have been working at the site to find out what happened.

Network Rail says early indications suggest that a suspected landslip may have caused the accident in the area.

The derailment has blocked the opposite railway line, and work to reopen it is now underway. This process will involve moving the train before engineers can begin repairs.

Phil James, North West Route Director at Network Rail, said:

“We want to thank passengers for their patience while we have investigated this extremely complex incident."

“Now that the RAIB staff have finished their investigation our team can begin the work of reopening the railway. We will need to move the train before we begin the repair work necessary to get services moving safely as soon as possible."

“This incident will continue to cause disruption for the rest of the day and we’re urging passengers to check with their train operator or National Rail Enquiries for the latest information."

Network Rail has confirmed that no trains will operate between Preston and Carlisle on 4th November as repair works continue. Passengers should check www.nationalrail.co.uk for up-to-date travel information and any alternative travel arrangements.
