Five people have been shot and a number of unexploded devices have been discovered at a subway station in New York.

Emergency services were called to reports of smoke coming from the subway station on 36th Street in the Brooklyn district of the city at around 8:30 a.m. local time (1:30 p.m. British time) on Tuesday (April 12th).

When fire personnel arrived to investigate, multiple people were found wounded from gunshots, whilst undetonated devices were also discovered, according to the New York City Fire Department.

Footage captured following the incident shows people fleeing the station after the shooting had taken place. Photos have also emerged of people tending to passengers shot lying on the floor of the station.

A spokesperson said that 13 people were injured in the incident, but no specific details have been given regarding the severity.

Following the shooting, local schools and shops near the station, which runs trains to downtown Manhattan in 15 minutes, were put on lockdown.

Eyewitness Sam Carcamo told radio station 1010 WIN: "My subway door opened into calamity. It was smoke and blood and people screaming."

Mr Carcamo added that smoke had been pouring out of the train as the carriage door opened.

As a result of the incident, trains serving the station during the morning rush hour were delayed.

Preliminary investigations from the emergency services revealed the suspect fled the scene whilst wearing a gas mask and a construction vest.

It is currently unknown whether police had been inside the station when the shooting occurred on Tuesday morning.

It comes as New York City has dealt with a number of shooting and high-profile incidents across the city, including on the subways. In January, a woman was pushed into an oncoming train to her death by a stranger.
