A family business in Kirkgunzeon has been given the prestigious honour of supplying one of two main Christmas trees to 10 Downing Street this festive season.
Scottish Christmas Trees, just a few miles from Dumfries, entered the British Christmas Tree Growers Association’s annual competition, attracting over 90 entries from 300 growers across the UK.
There, trees are judged on the quality, shape, and overall excellence.
As this year’s runner-up, owner Rory Young and his team will have their award-winning Nordman Fir displayed at Downing Street, in time for its Christmas light switch-on on December 1.
Young says it’s an honour: “The whole team is really pleased we did so well in the competition. It’s a great pat on the back for them. They work really hard in all conditions. 12 months of the year, they’re outside culturing and pruning the trees, trimming them – they work very hard. It’s great to see a reward like this and see our product go to such a famous address.
“The team and I have already selected the two trees to go down to 10 Downing Street. We tried to pick trees that looked fairly similar; they’re not too wide, but full all the way to the top, and they’re a nice dark green colour. But we’ve also got to take good care, we’ve got to get these delivered in good condition."
