Officers rescue homeless man from a burning tent in Manchester City Centre

The male inside was rescued by officers and a man has been arrested

Officers have rescued a man from a burning tent in Manchester City Centre.

At approximately 12:02am this morning (21 November), a tent was deliberately set on fire while a man was sleeping inside on Corporation Street, near to Exchange Square and Market Street.

While patrolling the City Centre in the early hours, officers noticed a tent engulfed in flames.

Upon investigation, they discovered a person inside and immediately acted to rescue him.

The individual was identified as a homeless male aged 53.

The victim’s belongings were destroyed in the fire.

Fortunately, he sustained no visible injuries.

Officers are liaising with social services to provide ongoing support to the male.

CCTV footage confirmed that the fire was started by another individual in the area.

A man aged 51 has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remains in custody for questioning.
