Jonathan Rea put himself right back into contention of a 7th consecutive World Superbike title - after an astonishing weekend in Portugal.

The Co Antrim star crashed out twice - first on Saturday and then yesterday before winning the final race in Portimao.

The victory in a race in which overall leader Toprak Razgatlioglu crashed out, leaves him 24 points behind the Turkish rider in the standings.

In Saturday's opener Rea suffered a left elbow abrasion and multiple contusions in his fast fall.

Afterwards, he said: "That was frustrating.

"I knew that if I wanted to make my rhythm I needed to get to the front.

"I could see in the early laps I was getting beaten up and especially Toprak arriving on the apex a lot. Surprising, and then I just couldn’t get my head down.

"I could see I was strong in most areas of the track but without a clean lap I couldn’t really get into the rhythm."

The next round of races take place at the weekend - again in Portugal.
