Women's World Cup: Callaghan aiming to end campaign on a high note
Latvia v Northern Ireland (3pm)
Northern Ireland skipper Marissa Callaghan says it's important the side end their Women's World Cup qualifying campaign on a positive note.
Kenny Shiels' side take on Latvia this afternoon aiming to finish third in the group with a win. It comes after they got the better of Luxembourg 2-1 on Friday. Rebecca McKenna's late strike proved the difference between the sides.
While Northern Ireland can't qualify for the finals themselves, a third-place finish would help in terms of the ranking co-efficient heading into the next batch of qualifiers.
For the vastly-experienced Callaghan, she says it's another step along the road in the improvement, which has been evident in recent times.
"We're still developing. We had a fantastic year in going to the Euros and that was obviously the pinnacle of the success in this short space of time," she said.
"But we're still really hungry and we still want to make sure that this time next year, we're ready to go and qualify for another major tournament.
With the injured Simone Magill and unavailable Rachel Furness - Northern Ireland's record goalscorer - not involved for the last two games, Callaghan says it's up to the rest of the squad to do their bit.
"We have to step up and we have to find the goals to win the game. Obviously, it's unfortunate not to have the likes of Simone and Rachel, along with the others not available, but especially those two."
Callaghan also said it's key to continue to encourage young girls to play football at grassroots level.
Off the back of the Euros, Women's football has been at the forefront of sport in Northern Ireland
"Our target is to get more and more girls playing the game as well as in the association. I'll try and do all I can to make the game grow here," Callaghan added.
