What next for Kyle Lafferty?
Northern Ireland's Kyle Lafferty is being linked with several clubs in Scotland after leaving Reggina by mutual consent.
His second spell in Italy lasted barely 6 months, meaning the striker is once again a free agent hunting for a new contract. The Serie B side issued a statement after his departure:
It read: “President Luca Gallo and Reggina announce that they have reached an agreement with the player Kyle Lafferty for the early consensual termination of the contract. Thanking Kyle for his professionalism, Reggina wishes him the best sporting fortunes.”
It's the low point of what have been several disappointing and nomadic years for Lafferty ever since leaving Norwich in 2017.
At first things seemed bright as he enjoyed a good season with Hearts, but he soon made an unsuccessful return to former club Rangers, which was then followed by short, uninspiring spells with Sarpsborg in Norway, and then Sunderland in League One, before his stint in Italy.
It's hard to predict what comes next for Lafferty.
The Fermanagh native has never been reluctant to move abroad, having previously signed for Swiss club Sion in 2012, and then finding form the following season in his first Serie B spell with Palermo. Although he's not a prolific striker in front of goal, he's usually heralded for his high energy, physical presence, and work rate, traits which seem to work in many different countries.
However, at the age of 33, time is no longer on his side.
One potential option is a return to Hearts, but the club is now in the Championship and may not want to meet his wage demands, while Hamilton are also on the hunt for new strikers, and Lafferty is based in the area.
Lafferty will be keen to find a club that allows him to regain form and fitness, as he's fallen out of favour with Northern Ireland. He's no longer an automatic starter, and hasn't found the net for his country since November 2016.
