Ards boss Colin Nixon has warned his players they are in a relegation dog-fight – despite their memorable Danske Bank Premiership win over Linfield.

And speaking as a guest on our latest BetMcLean show in association with NIFL – now available to view on Cool FM’s Facebook page (see link below) and to download as a podcast – Nicky admits “they are fighting for their lives”.

Ards became the first team this season to take three points off the Blues after a 2-1 win at the weekend.

But they remain in 10th place – just two points off the bottom.

Nixon says the result against Linfield was “definitely something to be proud of.”

But he warned: “The reality is we're still down there fighting for our lives.

“We can't get carried away, and have to keep working hard.

“When we have our best eleven on the park we're a match for anyone. We just have to keep working hard."

The Ards manager says morale is superb in the camp and he is optimistic they can finish well.

"The luck we've had and the spate of injuries have hit us hard,” he said.

“We lost a couple of games in the 94th minute. But we're working hard and we have a great team spirit. "

Nixon is also full of praise for his young keeper Sam Johnston – but says he would not block any move should he want to improve.

“One thing I would never do is stand in the road of somebody who wants to become a better footballer,” he says.

“But Sam's very loyal and we've been very loyal to him. We've invested time in him when others didn't. We're getting a return on him and he's massively important to us."
