Trimble says Ulster face '3 cup finals' to save their season
Ulster winger Andrew Trimble says their remaining fixtures this season must be treated like cup finals. The province look like they'll miss out on a PRO12 playoff place, and will need to win every remaining game to even stand a chance.
They'll begin their run in with a trip to Thomond Park, where they've traditionally struggled. Ulster last won in Limerick almost 3 years ago, as they took on a weakened side.
"Generally you go down there and you encounter a very, very physical Munster pack," Trimble said.
"They've also got a physical fifteen, an intimidating environment, and you've got to get yourself ready for it. Everybody knows what to expect, and everybody knows we've got to produce a big performance and pull something out of the bag."
Ulster's season has been in stark contrast to their interpro rivals. Leinster and Munster occupy the top two places in the PRO12, and could potentially meet in an all-Irish final of the European Champions Cup.
Trimble says it's been difficult watching the other provinces thrive.
"It's something we've got used to, but it's frustrating and we've only ourselves to blame. We make life hard for ourselves and it's tricky when you put yourself under pressure. Sometimes that brings out the best in us - but it's hard to do that week in, week out."
Trimble believes Ulster need to quickly change their approach for the trip to Munster.
"It's our last chance so we may as well give it a go. There's no point in trying to be conservative or manage the game, we've got to hold onto the ball and take them through phases,"
"It's a big ask, but the boys are up for it. We're feeling positive and excited about the challenge."
If Ulster are to salvage anything from this season, they need to begin with a win this weekend - and hope other results work in their favour. Anything else will close off their route into the top 4.
"We can be good on our day but we've got to be brave and dig deep, and just be tough out there. Hopefully that character produces a big performance, because there's no other option."
Ulster will wind down their season with a trip to Ospreys before they host Leinster on the 6th of May.
