As Steven Davis becomes the sixth Rangers Manager is as any years - albeit on a temporary basis at present - it looks like signalling the end of his international career and possibly his entire playing career.

The 38-year-old is currently recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained late last year and wasn't earmarked to play any football in 2023 regardless of being catapulted into the Ibrox dugout.

However, most Northern Ireland fans remained hopeful their captain and 140-cap talisman would return to the fold under Michael O'Neill at some stage next year.

That appears highly unlikely and it could well be the case that the Ballymena man has already played his final game for his country.

Davis leads an interim management team at the Glasgow giants, with former player Alex Rae and will take charge of his first match this Thursday, away to Cypriot aide Aris Limassol in the Europa League.

He takes over after Michael Beale was sacked last night following a disappointing start to the season. Beale departs after just over 10 months in charge, with the club missing out on the Champions League group stages and finding themselves already seven points adrift of fierce rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League, just seven games into the new season.

In a statement released on www.rangers.co.uk last night, the club announced they had parted ways with Beale and welcomed Davis in temporary charge.

"The club is pleased to announce that Steven Davis will lead the interim management team," the statement reads.

"The team will consist of former Rangers player and hugely experienced coach Alex Rae, former Rangers player and current coach Steven Smith, coach Brian Gilmour, and goalkeeping coach, Colin Stewart.

"Rangers Chairman, John Bennett, commented: “I’d like to thank Michael for his dedicated work since he re-joined the club as manager last November.

“It is clear that results have fallen well short of the board’s, Michael’s and our supporters’ expectations," the statement continued.

“The search process for the new manager is already underway. I wish Steven Davis and the interim management team every success - they will remain in charge for as long as it takes to make the right appointment.”

The appointment means the top three sides in Scotland are now managed by Northern Ireland natives - Brendan Rodgers (Celtic), Stephen Robinson (St Mirren) and now Steen Davis at Rangers.

Whether the Green and White Army get to see their hero and one of the greatest players to ever pull on a Northern Ireland shirt featuring for his country again, remain to be seen.

But, at this stage, that looks highly unlikely.
