Glentoran are expected to announce an interim solution for their vacant manager’s position later today after Gary Haveron was sacked last night.
It is believed the Glens will appoint a caretaker boss until the end of the season.
The legendary Ronnie McFall is believed to be in the running.
His last stint in management ended in March 2016 when he resigned from Portadown after more than 29 years at Shamrock Park – making him Europe’s longest reigning football boss.
However, one man who has been strongly linked with a more longer-term move to the Oval is Colin Nixon.
We spoke to the Ards manager yesterday just a few hours before Haveron’s departure.
Nixon, who played his entire professional career at the Oval, said the next Glens boss should have links to the club.
Speaking on our BetMcLean Football Show, he said: "It would need to be someone with a bit of Glentoran DNA, there's no question about that. Gary's in the job, and he's trying as hard as he can. I'm with Ards, I'm enjoying it, and I'm trying as hard as I can.
"The expectations at Glentoran have never changed, even if they maybe haven't won the trophies they would have liked. It's very hard to live up to that expectation and it's a very demanding job."
Nixon said Glentoran was a sleeping giant.
"It's a club that needs woken up from a slumber,” he said. Glentoran is still a massive club and it just needs a wee spark."
Nixon joins Crusaders striker Jordan Owens on our show which is available now to view shortly on Cool FM’s Facebook page (see link below).
Asked if Ards were safe in the Danske Bank Premiership, Nixon said “definitely not.”
“There are 10 games to go and I've learn how quickly 3 results can change things,” he said. “It can go bad just as it's going good. I can tell you something though, we will be working very hard to stay in this league."
