McIlroy's US Open campaign blown away after opening round shocker
World Number Six matches worst-ever start to a Major
Rory McIlroy is set to miss the cut at the US Open for the third year running.
It was an opener to forget yesterday as the World Number six struggled with the windy conditions at Shinnecock Hills in New York.
McIlroy finished Day One on an astonishing 10 over par. His score of 80 equalled his worst-ever start to a Major.
He was not alone, though. Together with Phil Mickelson and Jordon Spieth, their three-ball shot an incredible plus 25.
Graeme McDowell and Tiger Woods are also in trouble after both shooting nine over.
But there were no problems for a resurgent Ian Poulter.
He claimed a share of the clubhouse lead – carding a one-under-par 69.
