Rory McIlroy says he is trying to go into the US Open golf with a more relaxed approach – compared with recent majors.

The World Number Two tees off in Erin Hills tonight in the same group as Justin Rose and Jason Day.

It is his first tournament since he injured a rib and he is in confident mood.

“Over the past years couple of years the first round of majors I have been a little tight a little bit tentative I just need to get away from that because that is not how I play my best golf,” McIlroy said.

“That is why I like this golf course I feel it allows you to be aggressive, to swing freely and get after it.”

McDowell

Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell tees off this afternoon hoping to replicate the form that led him to victory in 2010 when he became the first European golfer to win the title.
