McAree replaces Oran Kearney, who joined St Mirren in Scotland.

He joins from Dungannon Swifts, with Glentoran reportedly having been interested in making him their boss at an earlier point as well.

A life-long connection to the club through his family came to a successful culmination last year, when McAree oversaw Swifts' League Cup success.

The new boss told Downtown/Cool FM he is delighted to get the post.

"It has been somewhat of a surprise that it has come about but it is a very welcome surprise," he said.

"It's one that I really wanted to make happen.

"It was getting to the stage where I wanted a new challenge, I wanted to try and better myself.

"I'm extremely proud to be sitting here as the new manager and I look forward to the challenge of getting started and working with a fantastic group of players."

McAree will be present to watch his new charges against Ards in league action on Saturday, but will leave management of that game to the backroom staff.
