Martin O’Neill has turned down the chance to manage Stoke City - with the job now going to ex Celtic ace Paul Lambert.

The Republic boss had been one of the favourites to succeed the sacked Mark Hughes – along with Espanyol’s Quigue Sanchez.

But after talks the 64-year-old has now opted to stay put.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill’s future is less certain, though.

He will have further discussions with the Scottish FA after a compensation clause was triggered.
