Colin Nixon has opened up for the first time about his sacking from Ards in February.

In a frank interview with Cool FM, he said he was sorry he did not take the Glentoran manager’s job last year.

Nixon said “getting sacked hurt me”.

The Oval legend was in the mix for the top job, but instead chose to remain with Ards, penning a new deal.

“I regret not going to Glentoran,” he said.

“People say you shouldn't regret decisions you make, but I did.

“We're talking about people who've been with Glentoran a long time.

“I was with Glentoran a long time and I absolutely love the club, as everyone knows.

Now, in his first interview since parting with the club, Nixon feels he would have turned things around at Ards - had he been given the chance

“Getting sacked hurt me,” he said.

“We had given the most time to teenage players. I felt something was building and it's another reason I stayed loyal.

"I managed to do two miracles in two years, but unfortunately I lost key players at key times.

“This year, I'd have kept them in the league, I firmly believe that. But it just got tougher and tougher."

Nixon was speaking on our latest BetMcLean show (in partnership with NIFL) available to view shortly on Cool FM’s Facebook page and to download as a podcast.
