Down Royal: famous racing spectacle gets under way today

One of the biggest dates in the racing calendar begins today (Friday) in Lisburn.

The famous two-day festival at the Down Royal attracts some of the highest-profile names in racing.

This year, champion trainers Willie Mullins, Paul Nicholls and Gordon Elliott are all involved.

Speaking on the racecourse website CEO Emma Meehan said: "Our two-day Ladbrokes Festival of Racing will mark the return to action of so many stars of the game and certainly the entries for the first Grade 1 of the season point to a top-notch renewal.

"The team at Down Royal are very much looking forward to two great days of racing and are working hard to ensure best in class both on and off course.”

Gates open today at 11 with the first race at 12.20.
