Liam Boyce is targeting a February return after his horror injury.

The Northern Ireland striker injured the cruciate ligament in his left knee during a friendly for Burton Albion against Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Boyce (26) only joined the Championship side in June – becoming the most expensive signing in their history.

A scan yesterday confirmed his worst fears.

It will mean he misses Northern Ireland’s vital World Cup qualifying games against San Marino, Czech Republic and Germany.

But the former Cliftonville and Ross County front-man is remaining positive about figuring again for Michael O’Neill’s side this season.

And he’ll be hoping to be on the plane to Russia should Northern Ireland qualify for the finals

Nigel Clough

Meanwhile, speaking to the club website after seeing his side beat Leicester 2-1, Burton boss Nigel Clough described Boyce’s injury as “devastating”.

He says that he will have to now look to bring in another forward.

"It was devastating for everybody not least Liam himself. He is the person we feel for the most - it is a devastating blow for him,” he said.

"We feared the worst after Saturday as we have seen a few over the years. There was no contact at all he just put his foot down and was unfortunate.

"We will certainly need to add a striker before the window closes.
