Gareth McAuley has returned to the Northern Ireland squad – nearly three months after being sidelined with a thigh injury.

The West Brom centre-back was named a short time ago by Michael O’Neill in the 26-man squad to face Germany next week in a World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium at Windsor Park.

It is a massive boost for O’Neill.

The 37-year-old has been turning back the years in his performances for the national side and his partnership with West Brom team-mate Jonny Evans has been rock solid.

Domestically, he made his first appearance last week when he came on as sub in West Brom’s League Cup defeat at the hands of Man City.

O’Neill also announced two uncapped players in the squad.

They are 22-year-old Jordan Jones from Kilmarnock and 24-year-old George Saville, who is with Millwall
