Tribute plan for Darren
By Alex Keery in FRANCE
Plans are in place for a tribute to the Northern Ireland fan who died in Nice.
Darren Rodgers (24) lost his life after falling from a promenade in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Republic of Ireland fans last night chanted ‘Stand Up for the Ulstermen’ in the 24th minute of their game with Sweden.
And the Northern Ireland fans intend to hold a minute’s applause during their game with Ukraine on Thursday.
IFA Chief Executive Patrick Nelson says they will also make a formal application to UEFA
“We’d like everyone to remember Darren and everyone to respect and to celebrate his memory whilst we are here in France,” he said.
“We are supportive of the 24th minute applause which supporters have suggested.
“We will talk to UEFA about a more formal tribute because I think we need their permission for a minute’s silence beforehand and/or black armbands so we’ll talk to UEFA about that.”
And manager Michael O’Neill says it is important to pay tribute to Darren.
“Hopefully, come Thursday night both the team and the supporters can again show their togetherness to pay respects to Darren Rodgers and his family,” he said.
“And that will be a fitting tribute”.
Meanwhile, It was nearly the perfect start to the Euros for the Republic.
Yesterday they outclassed an average looking Swedish team, and dominated possession.
That dominance soon turned to goals, with Wes Hoolahan drilled in a half volley early into the second half.
Although the Swedes barely registered a shot on target, Ciaran Clark scored an own goal, turning a Zlatan Ibrahimovich cross into his own net.
Although they could not secure the win they probably deserved Manager Martin O’Neill was impressed.
“I thought they were magnificent,” he said “They played some really great football.”
Elsewhere yesterday, Spain beat the Czech Republic 1-0, and a disappointing Belgian side were beaten 2-0 by Italy.
