The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across parts of Northern Ireland, this will come into effect from 9am - 11pm on Thursday 9th September.

Much of the UK is currently in the midst of warm conditions for the time of year, with temperatures in excess of 30C expected in England and Wales.

Whilst most areas will miss the most intense storms, torrential downpours are possible in a few places across NI. Where these occur, there is potential for 20 to 30 mm of rain in less than an hour and up to 40 mm in 2 hours.

What to expect:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some rural communities could temporarily become cut off by flooded roads

Northern Ireland four day forecast:

Today: Low cloud and mist burning back to Irish Sea coasts where some may linger, otherwise a fine dry day with long sunny spells. Becoming very warm. Maximum temperature 25 °C

Tonight: A sunny end to the day then dry with clear skies overnight. A few shallow mist or fog patches forming. Minimum temperature 13 °C****

Wednesday: Mostly dry with bright or sunny spells, but a few showers will break out later. Another very warm day. Maximum temperature 24 °C****

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday: Showers on Thursday, heavy at times with chance of thunder. Friday mainly cloudy with some rain then brightening up during Saturday. Becoming cooler
