Heavy rain & thunder warning issued for day one of The Open

It looks like the first day of The Open Championship in Portrush could be off to a miserable start, as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit the west of Northern Ireland on Thursday.

Showery rain will affect much of Northern Ireland at times throughout the day, but is expected to be heaviest in the west, according to forecasters thunderstorms are also likely.

The Met Office has predicted 10-20 mm of rain could fall in less than a few hours, with 30-40 mm possible over several hours.

A yellow weather warning has been issued from 11am until 8pm on Thursday.

Today: Early mist and fog patches will soon clear to leave a dry day with periods of warm sunshine. Cloud will build from the southwest towards the evening. Maximum temperature 23 °C.

Tonight: A bright and mainly dry evening with cloud soon increasing from the south. Rain will spread north from the late evening, heavy at times. Minimum temperature 10 °C.

Thursday: A cloudy morning with early rain clearing. Showers spread east from the morning, some heavy and thundery. Maximum temperature 23 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday: Sunny spells and frequent showers, some heavy. Showers will become isolated over southern parts during Sunday.
