Snow weather warning issued for Northern Ireland over New Year's

Strong winds and snow are on the way this week ⚠️ ❄️ ⛄️

The transition period between 2024 and 2025 looks distinctly unsettled for some parts of the UK, says the Met Office.

Strong westerly winds may lead to some travel disruption on New Year's Eve, the Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds from 6am to 7pm on Tuesday 31st December.

Then as temperatures start to dip on New Year's Day, the forecaster warns that heavy and persistent snow is on the way over NI on Wednesday and Wednesday evening.

A second yellow weather warning for snow will be in place Wednesday 1st January from 7am to midnight.

What should I expect?

❄️ There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected

❄️ There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off

❄️ Some roads and railways affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. There is a small chance of some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel

Northern Ireland's five-day forecast:

Today: This morning will be dry and rather cloudy, a little brightness here and there. Remaining dry this afternoon but still often cloudy. Fresh to strong westerly winds. Mild. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tonight: This evening will be dry. Then the rest of the night will be mainly dry and mostly cloudy, although rain may reach the north coast later. Windy. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Monday: A cloudy day with some patchy rain, this mainly across the north and west. Fresh to strong westerly winds, easing later. Mild. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: Rain at first on New Year's Eve, then mainly dry but turning windy later. Chance of some rain or snow on New Year's Day. Cold, mainly dry and bright Thursday.
