It's a chilly start to the new year, with a yellow weather warning in place this weekend for ice and snow across Northern Ireland.

According to the Met Office, spells of rain, sleet and snow will develop from the south late Saturday before clearing through Sunday.

Coastal areas will likely see rain, but inland and over higher ground, sleet and snow is more likely. Locally 1-3 cm of snow is possible away from coasts, with 5-10 cm possible over the Mournes, Sperrins and Antrim Hills.

Ice will be an additional hazard, especially on untreated surfaces.

Northern Ireland's five day forecast 👇

Today: Staying cold. Any freezing fog that has formed overnight will slowly thin and disperse during the morning. Otherwise dry and bright much of the day with perhaps the odd coastal shower in the north and east. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Tonight: Dry at first with cloud thickening from the south through the evening. The odd shower, wintry over high ground, over northern counties, becoming more persistent rain over Down and Antrim. Minimum temperature 0 °C.

Sunday: The odd shower of rain or hill snow in the north, more persistent spells of rain over Down and Antrim with strong northeasterly winds at times. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday: Staying cold with bright spells and wintry showers, these heavier and more prolonged at times on Monday and Tuesday with occasionally strong northwesterly winds. Generally drier with lighter winds Wednesday.
