Thunderstorms and heavy showers look set to batter much of Northern Ireland over the next 24-48 hours, the Met Office has said.

Forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning as torrential rain is likely to develop during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday throughout counties Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Derry~Londonderry & Fermanagh.

"Many places will miss the worst of the storms but where they do occur torrential downpours could bring 30-40 mm rain in less than two hours. Lightning and hail are also likely to be additional hazards."

The Met Office's weather warning comes into effect from 16:00 Thursday lasting through until 09:00 Friday.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds."

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures."

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

There is some good news though, as Thursday daytime is forecast to a very humid sunny day with parts of the province seeing temperatures soar to 25 degrees.
