A week-long cold snap is expected to chill Northern Ireland this week.

Easterly winds are set to bring a blast of Siberian air from western Russia towards us.

Temperatures will drop close to freezing during the day and well below that overnight, when there will be sharp widespread frosts and the risk of ice.

The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ weather warning.

Heavy snow showers are expected to develop through the middle part of the week.

Some tips to prepare for a potential cold snap.

10. Keep up to date with the forecast- make checking the Met Office website part of your regular routine so you’ll know when to expect cold weather.

9. Protect your water pipes from freezing, keep your house a little warmer. Consider topping up on oil or gas. Leave water taps slightly open so they drip continuously.

8. Stock up on de-icer and purchase an ice scraper. Now is a good time to top up on things like antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, oil etc. Stay on main roads and avoid back road shortcuts. Make sure your vehicle has at least a half a tank of fuel.

7. In case there is a power failure:

  • Have a mobile phone, portable charger, and extra batteries handy.
  • Torch
  • Radio

6. Be sure to check on vunerable elderly neighbours and family members.

5. Stock up on any necessary medication.

4. Consider buying 2-3 days worth of food supplies. If you live remote and far from other people, have more supplies on hand.

3. Dress for the weather! Use many thin, warm layers rather than a few thick layers. Purchase thermals, hat, gloves, hand warmers. Stay warm and dry.

2. Drive only if absolutely necessary. If you must drive: travel in the day; don’t travel alone and keep others informed of your route.

1. Stay indoors during periods of heavy snowfall.
