A teenage boy has died in a coastal accident near Portrush.

It followed Coleraine and Ballycastle coastguard declaring a "major incident" close to Dunluce Castle - shortly after 5pm yesterday.

It is understood another teenager received minor injuries.

Local MLA Cara Hunter visited the scene last night.

She told Downtown Radio & Cool FM that her thoughts were very much with the families right now "at this very sad time."

And she added: "I would like to thank the emergency response team, the Coastguard and ambulance services for their quick response."

The Coleraine and Ballycastle coastguard teams were tasked to the area close to Whiterocks beach.

The PSNI was also involved and a Rescue helicopter from Prestwick dispatched.

In a statement this morning, the PSNI confirmed the "sudden death of a young male whose body was recovered from the sea at Dunluce Castle near Bushmills yesterday evening."

It is not clear of the circumstances of the incident but it is understood three people, believed to be friends of the young man, had tried to rescue him.

We spoke to Alistair Simpson who is the Station Officer at Coleraine Coastguard.
