Local TikTok star Mammy Banter nominated for top industry award
We've got an exclusive interview with the legend Serena Terry herself 🤣
Serena Terry aka TikTok sensation Mammy Banter has taken the world by storm over the last 18 months.
The Derry/Londonderry based mum of two, has us in stitches video after video with her ‘real-life’ comedy skits and performances.
What started off as a hobby at the start of lockdown has grown into a full-time business for Serena. Her account Mammy Banter has racked up an incredible 20.3M likes and over 719K followers on TikTok. Plus over 170K followers on Facebook and 150K on Instagram 🤯
“Since the very beginning, my audience has always been fully engaged. The beauty of social media is the reach, surprisingly I now have more followers in America than I do here in Ireland. It’s taken about a year and a half to build my audience, and we’re still growing.”
One of Serena’s most asked questions is where does her inspiration come from? “The madness of being a woman,” joked Serena. “Being a mammy and a wife is inspiring to me. I’d love to say all of it is dramatised for effect, but the majority isn’t.”
Mammy Banter was recently recognised by Heat’s Funny Women Awards 2021 and Serena was nominated for the Content Creator Award. “I can’t believe it, it’s still so surreal. I’m just sitting at home, creating TikTok videos. Since I shared the news to my followers, the feedback has been amazing! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me by linking, sharing or commenting on my posts, you’re what keeps me going!”
“It’s unbelievable the amount of talent in these awards, the other accounts are definitely worth a follow too. A year and a half ago I was sitting at home in my 9-5 job and now I’m making TikToks, to be nominated alongside this calibre of content creators and female comedians is just incredible.
“I’ve kind of been on auto pilot for the last year and a half, pumping out video after video. And yes, there are some tough days when you don’t feel too creative, but it’s the amazing comments and messages that keep me going. To see that one of my videos has made some smile or made their day, that reminds me why I do what I do. I want to help others laugh about real life and share the realities of being a mum.
“If I won the Funny Women Award it would completely validate the amount of time and effort I put into each skit. It’s not as easy as it looks, to build your audience you need a constant flow of content. So, this would validate the hard work of the last year and a half and help encourage me to keep going and do more.”
We quizzed Serena about any potential TV sketches for upcoming projects, Serena burst out laughing. “Never say never, I’d love to write comedy TV, it’s something perhaps in the future if the opportunity came about, I’d love to give it a go.”
