Around 25,000 households across Northern Ireland were still without electricity today (Wednesday) - nearly a week after Storm Eowyn left a trail of devastation in its wake.

More than 1,400 NIE Networks staff are taking part in a major power restoration plan.

A spokesperson said: "Our primary focus is to restore power to all affected customers across Northern Ireland.

"We now have over 1400 staff escalated, additional electrical and industrial employees from other agencies and jurisdictions along with further resource arriving today."

The spokesperson warned that over the coming days there may be occasions when householders "experience interruption to their electricity supply as we undertake permanent repairs and work to restore all those impacted. "

"Employees from our contact centre may also be in contact to check that supply has been restored," the spokesperson added.

"We are particularly keen to again remind the public to maintain safety around any damaged electricity equipment and never approach a broken pole or overhead power lines, and keep children and animals away.

"Householders can report faults online and check for status updates at www.nienetworks.co.uk, or by calling the NIE Networks Customer Helpline on 03457 643 643."
