Rory McIlroy flew into Northern Ireland today (Friday) five days after his history-making Masters triumph.

It is understood a private jet touched down at the George Best City Airport this morning.

It is not known if McIlroy will be carrying out any specific engagements but he did say after winning in Augusta that he would be visiting his mum Rosie and dad Gerry.

The win made McIlroy the first player in a quarter of a century to complete the career grand slam and match the feats of Gene Sarazen (completed in 1935), Ben Hogan (1953), Gary Player (1965), Jack Nicklaus (1966) and Tiger Woods (2000)..

After donning the famous Green Jacket, he reflected on his achievement and said he was looking forward to celebrating with his parents.

An emotional McIlroy said: ""I want to say hello to my mum and dad - they are back home in Northern Ireland," he said. "I can't wait to see them next week and celebrate with them."

Meanwhile, Michelle O'Neill said afterwards that she hoped Northern Ireland will stage the 'biggest party ever' to mark Rory McIlroy's homecoming.
