Rory McIlroy files for divorce after seven years of marriage

Holywood golfer and world number two, Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce.

According to court records, McIlroy filed paperwork on Monday in Florida.

The couple first met in 2012 at the Ryder Cup, they got married at Ashford Castle in 2017 and share a daughter Poppy who was born in August 2020.

Last weekend, McIlroy won his fourth career Wells Fargo Championship.

The local star produced a superb finish at Quail Hollow in North Carolina, to beat American Xander Schauffele by five shots - and along with the trophy, a first prize of 3.6 million dollars.

The world number two is scheduled to speak to the media on Wednesday afternoon at Valhalla, the scene of his last major victory in 2014.

A spokesperson for McIlroy released a statement which said: "Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed."

"They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."
