The 22-year-old Glasgow man was found on his surfboard in the North Channel on Monday night after going surfing on Sunday morning.

He is said to be comfortable and recovering well.

Speaking about his ordeal, Matthew was full of praise for the care he is receiving.

“I want to thank staff here in Ward 15 at the Ulster Hospital who, together with the rescue services, saved my life," he said.

He added: "They are all heroes."

Matthew was brought to the Ulster suffering from hypothermia, after being plucked out of the water by a rescue helicopter.

His family travelled to the hospital in Dundonald to be with him shortly after.

His parents Isabella and John also paid tribute to the staff after they clubbed together to buy him pyjamas.

“We cannot thank staff enough for the treatment Matthew has received and the kindness they have shown to us. They have been wonderful.”
