Public urged to know the signs of oesophageal and gastric cancers
NI cancer charity launches awareness campaign
A local cancer charity is urging the public to know the signs of oesophageal and gastric cancers.
OG Cancer NI is highlighting the many early signs that are often overlooked in an attempt to improve the rate of early detection.
These include persistent indigestion, heartburn or acid reflux, food sticking in the throat and regular hiccups.
Helen Setterfield MBE, Chair of OG Cancer NI said: “OG cancers have a poor survival rate, because all too often, the warning signs aren’t recognised and are overlooked. If diagnosed at a late stage, the disease has often spread to the extent it becomes untreatable.
“As part of our awareness campaign at the moment, several people in Northern Ireland have kindly agreed to share their stories and those of their loved ones who have experienced OG cancer. Many people don’t recognise that they have had some warning signs as they are so common or delay going to their GP because they think it is perhaps trivial. What we are saying is, be aware – and don’t delay in going to your doctor. These types of cancers can be treated if identified quickly, so check it out, it could help you catch it early.”
