Police confirmed today (Wednesday) that patrols have increased in Coleraine after what is believed to be a bag containing sinister items was found in the town.

SDLP MLA for the area Cara Hunter has urged women to be vigilant - following the discovery on the Strand Road before Valentines Day.

Reports suggest that among the items were a balaclava and cable ties.

"I think there is an awareness already in the local area about violence against women and girls," Ms Hunter said. "Thankfully police have been very strong on their messaging with increased patrols."

And she said she had received a message from the Ulster students union about a rise in spiking incidents in the Coleraine students area.

"This is deeply concerning - women in our local area do not feel safe," she said.

Meanwhile, a PSNI spokesperson said: "Following a report from a member of the public, police in Coleraine have seized a bicycle and a bag containing a number of items which were located in the Strand Road area of the town on Thursday, 13th February.

"The investigation is ongoing and police are progressing a number of lines of enquiry.

"Since this report on the 13th, there has been an increased policing presence in the area, with officers visibly on enhanced patrols which will continue.

"Police would appeal to anyone who might have any information which could assist them to speak to officers on the ground or contact 101 and quote reference number 377 of 13/02/25"
