Matthew O'Toole today (Friday) gave his backing to Claire Hanna to be the new leader of the SDLP.

His endorsement follows Colum Eastwood announcing he will be stepping down in October.

Mr O'Toole, the party's Stormont leader, said Ms Hanna, the South Belfast and Mid Down MP, is the best person to build a coalition for an "inclusive new Ireland".

In Londonderry yesterday, Mr Eastwood tipped her to succeed him.

He said she was far and away" the best candidate to replace him as SDLP leader.

"I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Claire Hanna has what it takes to be the leader of the SDLP," he said.

"She would be far and away the best option for the members.

"This is my opportunity to be the first to endorse Claire Hanna.

"It is up to Claire but I hope she puts her name forward, and I hope the party endorse her."
