NI Women's boss Shiels apologises for 'emotional women' comment
He made the remarks following last night's defeat to England
Northern Ireland Women's international manager Kenny Shiels has apoligised for comments he made following last night's 5-0 World Cup qualifying defeat at home to England.
Speaking post-match. Shiels commented that he felt women were 'too emotional' and that was a reason behind conceding in goals in quick succession during matches.
"If you look at the patterns, when a team concedes a goal they concede a second one within a very short period of time.
"That's because girls and women are more emotional than men.
The comments sparked criticism of the Northern Ireland boss, who has led the side to their first ever major international tournament, when they take part in the Euros in England this July.
In a statement released this afternoon by the Irish Football Association, Shiels has said sorry for the remarks.
"I wish to apologise for my comments made in the post-match press conference last night. I am sorry for the offence that they have caused," he said
"Last night was a special occasion for the women’s game in Northern Ireland and I am proud to manage a group of players who are role models for so many girls, and boys, across the country.
Shiels added: "I am an advocate for the women's game and passionate about developing opportunities for women and girls to flourish."
Northern Ireland take on Norway, Austria and England in this Summer's European Championships in July, with all three games taking place at Southampton's St Mary's stadium.
