There are also plans to bring the service to the Belfast area in the future.

The free programme will provide diet and lifestyle advice, vocal therapy and information sessions as well as help for carers.

It's thought there are around 3600 people affected by the condition across Northern Ireland.

Ian Parsley from Parkinsons UK said there is not enough research being carried out into the disease.

"200 years we've known about this, 50 years we haven't had any advances in medication, we think it's time to get advances in medication but also we want to do what we can do locally to try to help people live fuller lives with the condition as it is at the moment." He said.

The partnership comes after Parkinson's awareness week, in which it was discovered people across the province want more access to information about the illness.

Ian Parsley says the new programme aims to address that.

"The huge advantage for people in the Foyle area is that they will now have a point of contact for information, a lot of people say they don't have enough information about medication, exercise and diet." He said.

He added: "People can go along for a period of four weeks for two hour sessions and just find out more about living with the condition.

"It can be how to live with the condition in terms of practicalities practicalities but it can also be things like dance and yoga, diet, things that actually help people live better and fuller lives."

The programme is being offered free but spaces are limited.

Anna Murray, area development manager for the charity says there is still a lot to learn about Parkinsons.

"We still find that Parkinson's presents in very different ways and can be incredibly unpredictable,

"That is why we have put in place a great range of speakers and facilitators who can provide expert information in a relaxed setting to anyone in the North West affected by Parkinson's.

"Bookings for the programme can be made by phoning me on 03001233677 or emailing amurray@parkinsons.org.uk." She said.
