A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after reports of a serious sexual assault in south Belfast.

PSNI Detective Inspector Zoe McKee said: “A woman aged in her 20’s reported that she was assaulted by a man in the doorway of commercial premises in the area at around 12.40am.

"A 25 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and is currently in custody assisting officers with their enquiries."

The number of rape crimes reported in Northern Ireland was at a 16-year high in 2016, with 810 instances.

Police have appealed for anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
