Huge crowds expected to pay tribute to William Dunlop
A service celebrating the life of the late William Dunlop will be held at GarryDuff Presbyterian Church today.
Ballymoney road racer William Dunlop will be laid to rest today, after his tragic death on Saturday.
The 32-year-old died following an incident during practice sessions at the Skerries 100 in Dublin.
The Ballymoney rider was involved in a fatal accident at the Sam’s Tunnel section of the course on his Temple Golf Club Yamaha.
Rev John Kirkpatrick, minister of Portrush Presbyterian Church, will be leading the service.
He also officiated at the funerals of William’s uncle, Joey and father Robert.
Dunlop was making his return to racing following his withdrawl from the 2018 Isle of Man TT last month to be with his pregnant partner.
He began his racing career in 2000, and has gone on to win 108 times on Ireland's national road racing scene, as well as four victories at the North West 200, seven at the Ulster Grand Prix and five podiums at the TT.
Race organisers Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters Club confirmed William’s passing in a statement, which read: "We deeply regret to announce that competitor William Dunlop has passed away following injuries received in a tragic accident that occurred during practice which took place today, 7th July 2018.”
"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to William Dunlop's family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time."
Tributes have been pouring in for the well-known and well-liked sporting icon since the tragic news broke on Saturday evening.
